Emma Hope Allwood discovers the shimmering side of Bally's latest collection
The spirit of Bally's autumn/winter 17 collection is defined by a sense of daring, risk and adventure. It's hardly surprising, considering its diverse list of influences – from the stylish hedonists flocking to Monte Carlo's casinos in the 1960s and 1970s, to out of this world glam-rock musical icons such as Prince and Ziggy Stardust. That's not forgetting its strong nod to the era-defining world of disco, and the characters who danced the night away in its famous nightclubs after dark.
Naturally, such glittering inspirations find their expression in the metallics that accent the collection – appearing across ready-to-wear, accessories and, of course, shoes. In fact, it's not difficult to imagine Bianca Jagger gliding past Studio 54's red velvet rope in a leopard printed belt with a gilded Belle buckle, or pairing the wide-collared silk giraffe blazer with some suitably 70s flares for an evening on the town.
Perhaps she'd brush shoulders with Debbie Harry, twirling under the many disco balls in the rainbow Georgette slingback pump? A style inspired by one found in Bally's archives, they aren't far off some the iconic singer was snapped wearing to the legendary watering hole, paired with a dazzling gold jumpsuit. Legend has it that at one Studio 54 New Year's Eve party, no less than four tonnes of glitter were dropped onto the dancefloor (and, we assume, the guests). In these looks, you would hardly notice.
For the casino-goers getting ready to roll the dice or hoping to play their cards right, what best to complement the collection's updated velvet eveningwear, rich jewel tones, silk smoking jackets and playing card motifs than sparkling accessories? Perhaps AW17's most show-stealing look, this spectacular blouse (complete with extreme pussy bow) would be ideal for an evening spent in the company of Lady Luck. For men, a textured silk crepe bow tie is perfect to bring serious personality to timeless black tailoring, adding undeniable charm and shimmering sophistication.
The idea of treasure has long been associated with the many myths that swirl around the colour gold – like a rare find, the coveted Suzy shoulder bag gets rendered in lustrous gilt leather, and comes complete with a luxurious suede-lined interior. One of the newest additions to the Bally family, the head-turning bag looks like something plucked straight out of El Dorado – and is the ultimate way to add allure to any outfit.
